Project Manager Value

In the corporate world, project management is often taken for granted, and it's surprising how much it fails as a result.  In the information technology domain, most companies will look to their Operations department (technicians, helpdesk agents, accountants, etc). to get project work done, thinking they are saving the expense of a Project Manager.

I realized that I often have a feeling as though something is incomplete when I complete projects. Today I came to a realization of what it was: I did not allow in my mind to celebrate the completion itself!

The fact that something is completed means that we could move on to other things to work on. When we don't complete within our own minds that the project is completed, either because something is still not resolved, even if it's a small thing, or if there was no appropriate completion celebration, I think we feel trapped in that zone of ongoing and incomplete work. At least that's what I realized for myself and my experiences.

Something actually triggered my thinking about it when a colleague told me something as simple as "Great, that was it, I now consider this project complete! Thank you for your support!". Actually acknowledging the completion allows for something to be complete in your mind. Once that's done, you can move on to something else, without carrying this with you.

I have definitely heard people talk about "celebrating the project successes", but having connected it to the concept of completion and what it means to me, I can see the benefit of doing, which is not for the sake of just having a celebration event.
